Johannesburg The cosmopolitan city
of Johannesburg (or Joburg for short) is an ideal base to visit the rest
of the country from. However, make sure you find time to explore Joburg
including the popular guided tour of Soweto where you can visit the
house where Nelson Mandela grew up in.
Cape Town On the southern tip of
Africa where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans met is the beautiful city of
Cape Town. The stunning Table Mountain is the iconic symbol of Cape Town
and there is plenty to see and do with the Victoria and Alfred
Waterfront proving very popular with visitors. Robben Island was the
prison home of former President Nelson Mandela for many years. Cape Town
is also considered one of the best places in the world to watch Whales
(mainly Aug – Nov).
Durban The costal town of Durban in
KwaZulu Natal is the King of the Sunshine Coast. If you want a bit more
than just beautiful beaches why not visit the Aquarium, Botanical
Gardens or the Snake Park. Durban is also an ideal starting point to
explore the rest of KwaZulu Natal.
KwaZulu Natal In the late 19th
century, two famous battles between the British Army and the Zulu army
were fought here. At Isandlwana, the Zulus wiped out 1,500 soldiers and
later at Roukes Drift, just 100 British soldiers fought off over 4,000
zulus in a 12 hour battle which resulted in 12 Victoria Crosses being
awarded. Today, you can meet the Zulus yourself at the excellent
Shakaland Zulu Experience. The Drakensburg Mountains provide
stunning scenery and offer a range of outdoor pursuits. Wildlife is also
abundant at various game reserves and in the north, St Lucia Wetland
Park is home to a wide variety of animal and bird life. For the scuba
diver, a few nights at Sodwana Bay is a must.

The Garden Route This stunning
drive along South Africa’s western coast for 200 miles and is best
explored by car. You can start from Capetown or if you prefer, take an
internal flight to George or Port Elizabeth. En route, you will see a
diverse array of mountain passes, pretty towns like Ladysmith, forested
hills, inland lakes and high bridges over raging rivers. Along the
route, you will find Plettenburg Bay with beautiful beaches, excellent
seafront cafes, shops, restaurants as wells as the opportunity for
whale-watching between July and October.
Train Journeys Since colonial days,
train travel has played a vital part of the transportation network in
Southern Africa. Today, air travel is becoming more popular but the
timeless beauty of train travel is still available with Rovos Rail,
Shongololo Express and the world famous Blue Train.
On Safari As with other countries
in this part of Africa, the safari options in South Africa are
excellent. The best know park is the Kruger National Park. Open vehicle
safaris in the search of the Big Five are available or if you prefer
walking safaris, helicopter flights and elephant safaris are all
available. As well as Kruger, there are many other game reserves around
the country. Why not combine your safari with a visit to Cape Town or
Mauritius ?
Winelands South African wine is one
of the finest in the world and you can visit the areas where it is
produced. Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 and is the countries second
oldest town after Cape Town. There are over 100 cellars here, most of
which are open to the public. Franschhoek is where French settlers first
produced wine over 300 years ago. While you are here, make sure you
sample the excellent cuisine as well as the wine. 40 minutes from Cape
Town is Paarl. The town is home to a number of wineries so why not enjoy
you lunch in the natural beauty that surrounds you.
World Cup 2010 South Africa has
been given the honour of being the first African country to host the
FIFA World Cup. The opening and final matches will be played at Soccer
City in Joburg and there are another 9 venues around the country in
Durban, Cape Town, Joburg, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Polokwane,
Bloemfontein, Rustenburg and Nelspruit.
