Location

The beautiful islands of Mauritius are located in the Indian Ocean around 900km east of Madagascar. Reunion, french island, is 200 km south west and Rodrigues, a dependence of Mauritius is 600 km to the east. The islands are renowned for having been the only known home of the dodo which was first sighted in 1600. Less than 80 years later, it was extinct.

Currency

The Mauritian unit of currency is the rupee (Rs), which is divided into 100 cents. Armed with your PIN, it’s perfectly possible to travel on plastic in Mauritius since ATMs are widespread. The majority of machines accept Visa and MasterCard, or any similar cards in the Cirrus and Plus networks, while Amex now has a tie-in with Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB).

Visas

Most visitors do not require a visa to enter Mauritius and initial entry is usually granted for a maximum stay of one month.
