Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Often called the 8th Wonder of the World, the Ngorongoro in northern Tanzania covers an area of more than 8,000sq km and borders the Serengeti National Park to the north and the west.

The volcanic landscape is rich and fertile and is said to have the highest density of wildlife in Africa. The Ngorongoro Crater is a spectacular bowl with the sides reaching up to 600m and it is believed that around 10,000 – 20,000 animals are in the 265sq km crater at anyone time.

Among the animals and predators, it is home to are the endangered Black Rhino. The population is still small but it is thriving in the area which is one of the few places the Black Rhino continues to breed. Other species that are commonly found include wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, gazelle, elephant and Africa’s big cats.

The Olduvai Gorge is often referred to as the ‘Cradle of Mankind’ and it was here that remains dating back 1.8m years were found in the early 20th century. It forms part of the Great Rift Valley and is sometimes spelt Oldupai Gorge.

Getting There & Getting Around

From the UK, you can take an overnight flight with Kenyan Airways to Nairobi before connecting to your flight to Kilimanjaro near Arusha. From there, you will transfer by road to your game lodge. Routes may be changed depending on your itinerary which we can tailor to suit you. Regional departures from the UK are available connecting via Amsterdam or London to Kenya.

Weather

The rim of the Ngorongoro crater is over 2,000m above sea level and in general the weather is moderate. The weather is at its best between October and December although November is one of the two rainy seasons in Ngorongoro. The other rainy season is April-May and during these seasons, spectacular thunderstorms can be seen. The coldest time is between June and August.
